Welcome to #BlackoutTuesday, which was created by two music executives (Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang). This initiative was spearheaded to cease normal business operations and “business as usual” on Tuesday, 2nd June due to ALL Black Lives which have always been at stake.
This initiative was brought about as the world is still trying to deal with the cowardly murder on May 25, 2020, where George Perry Floyd, an African-American man, was killed in the Powderhorn community of Minneapolis, Minnesota. While Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on a city street during an arrest, Derek Chauvin, a white American Minneapolis police officer, kept his knee on the right side of Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds; according to the criminal complaint against Chauvin, 2 minutes and 53 seconds of that time occurred after Floyd became unresponsive. Officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas K. Lane participated in Floyd’s arrest, with Kueng holding Floyd’s back, Lane holding his legs, and Thao looking on and preventing intervention by an onlooker as he stood nearby. This has created an uproar worldwide and protests occurring daily round the cities within America and other countries like the United Kingdom amongst others.
Agyemang in an Instagram post about the #theshowmustbepaused initiative stated: “We are tired and can’t change things alone.” “This is a call to action for those of us who work in music/entertainment/show business to pause on Tuesday, June 2nd because the show can’t just go on as our people are being hunted and killed.”
But what started as a movement now has been transformed into a collective fury, causing global participation of individuals, celebrities and businesses alike to participate in the movement. Thomas and Agyemang (in a letter to their official site), said Blackout Tuesday is “in observance of the long-standing racism and inequality that exists from the boardroom to the boulevard.” “Tuesday, June 2 is meant to intentionally disrupt the workweek.”
Either way, Change HAS Come
Revolution HAS Arrived
