International Women’s Day (March 8) was a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marked a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
International Women’s Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. It is safe to note that IWD is not a country, group or organization specific, it belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.
The campaign theme for this year’s IWD2020 was #EachforEqual – an equal world is an enabled world. Individually, we are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day but we can also actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women’s achievements.
Equality is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue. Gender equality is essential for economies and communities to thrive.
The race has been on (and still is on) for the gender-equal boardroom, a gender-equal government, gender-equal media coverage, gender-equal workplaces, gender-equal sports coverage, more gender equality in health and wealth … so let’s make it happen.
A gender-equal world can be healthier, wealthier and more harmonious – so what’s not great about that?
Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender-equal world so let’s build one while we can.
The 2020 #EachforEqual campaign runs all year long. It doesn’t end on International Women’s Day. Do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women everywhere.
Let’s all be #EachforEqual.
