Yesterday, January 21st was Martin Luther King Jr. Day which is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., (King would have been 90 years old this year), and celebrating his life and achievements. MLK (as he was fondly called) was an influential American civil rights leader, well-known for his campaigns fighting for justice, equality and liberation and acting as a moral bridge between people.
For me, MLK represented a struggle for civil rights and social justice within America & I must say worldwide. A brave man who inspired and lead a movement that in many ways continues, although in different forms, today. It really means building that power and being able to stand up for yourself and your community.
Even though we honour the life and legacy of a man who fought to change the landscape of race relations in America, the celebration was slightly tainted by American Vice President, Mike Pence trying to compare MLK to trump. Vice President Mike Pence was slammed after likening President Donald Trump’s recent proposal regarding his border wall to Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic “I have a dream” speech from 1963.
“One of my favourite quotes from Dr. King was, ‘Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.’ You think of how he changed America. He inspired us to change through the legislative process to become a more perfect union. That’s exactly what President Trump is calling on the Congress to do,” Pence, 59, remarked.
Pence’s remarks quickly generated a passionate backlash online. Imagine cheer leading for his boss, a bigot who literally praised people who were marching alongside the KKK and Neo-Nazis. The stain of Charlottesville is precisely what MLK Jr. tried to remove from America but Trump defended it.
Personally, I found Pence’s remark as an insult to Dr. King’s Legacy and he should have known better as a public figure to think before talking.
As Americans celebrated yesterday, it should be known that King’s holiday, his legacy and his dream are still under siege and that should not be forgotten.
Remembering the words of the great man: ‘Love, not hate, will make America great.’ ” And that is ALL that Matters & WILL HAPPEN Worldwide …
